Ledger® Live: Desktop® — Getting Started

Official desktop companion for Ledger hardware wallets — secure account management, staking, swaps and more.

Welcome — Desktop-first workflow for a safer setup

Ledger Live Desktop is the recommended host application for installing device apps, initializing or restoring wallets, managing multiple accounts, and performing transactions with your Ledger hardware wallet. This guide walks you through a complete getting-started experience: verifying device authenticity, installing Ledger Live safely, initializing your device, recording and protecting your recovery phrase, installing apps via the Manager, and tips for staking, DeFi integrations, and enterprise-grade workflows.

Step 1 — Download safely

Always download Ledger Live from the official page at ledger.com/ledger-live. Verify the SSL lock and avoid third-party mirrors or torrent sites. Use the correct installer for your operating system.

Step 2 — Unbox & verify

Inspect packaging and tamper-evident seals. Confirm serial numbers and ensure the packaging shows no signs of tampering. Devices bought from the official Ledger Shop reduce the risk of compromised hardware.

Step 3 — Install & initialize

Run Ledger Live, follow the on-screen guide to initialize a new device or restore an existing recovery phrase. Ledger Live will guide you through creating a PIN and generating a recovery phrase if you choose to create a new wallet.

Step 4 — Record your recovery

Write down the recovery phrase exactly as shown on-device. Store copies in separate secure locations—avoid digital storage. Consider metal backups for long-term durability.

Walkthrough: first-time setup (expanded)

When you open Ledger Live for the first time, choose "Set up a new device" or "Restore device" depending on your situation. If setting up new: create a PIN on your device, write down the 24-word recovery phrase, and confirm it during the flow. Ledger Live will then let you install blockchain-specific apps through the Manager to enable particular accounts (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana).

The Manager and apps

The Manager within Ledger Live installs the minimal apps required for each blockchain to allow secure interaction. Apps isolate blockchain logic on-device: installing, removing, and updating apps is done via the Manager. Note: uninstalling an app does not delete your accounts — accounts are recovered from your recovery phrase when the app is reinstalled.

Account management & transactions

Use Ledger Live to add accounts for supported blockchains. To receive funds, generate a receiving address and verify it on your Ledger device. When sending, Ledger Live prepares the transaction and your device signs it — verify the amount and recipient address on-device before confirmation. This on-device verification is the core security feature: private keys never leave the hardware.

Secure signing

All cryptographic signatures happen on your Ledger device. Even if Ledger Live or your computer is compromised, your private keys remain isolated.

Portfolio & tracking

Ledger Live shows portfolio value, transaction history, and market data to help you track performance across multiple accounts and assets.

Staking & DeFi integrations

Stake supported tokens directly through Ledger Live integrations or interact with DeFi partners while continuing to sign transactions on-device for safety.

Security checklist

  • Download Ledger Live only from the official site. Ledger Live
  • Purchase devices from the official Ledger Shop.
  • Record your recovery phrase offline and consider metal backups.
  • Set a strong PIN and never share it. Enable passphrase only if you understand implications.
  • Keep Ledger Live and firmware updated via official channels. Check firmware documentation for guidance.

Testing & troubleshooting

After setup, perform a small test transaction to confirm receive & send flows work as expected. If the device is not recognized, reconnect, try a different USB port or cable, and ensure Ledger Live is allowed through your firewall. For persistent issues consult the Support Center.

Advanced uses: staking, multisig, and enterprise

Ledger Live supports staking for multiple protocols via native integrations and partners. For higher security, consider multisig setups where Ledger devices act as signers — this reduces single-point-of-failure risk. Ledger also provides enterprise-grade solutions and APIs for institutions looking to integrate ledger-backed signing into custody workflows. Consult official documentation and professional services when planning advanced deployments.

DeFi & NFT interactions

Ledger Live integrates with vetted partners for DeFi and NFT experiences. When interacting with smart contracts, always verify permissions and the transaction summary on the device. Minimize repeated unlimited approvals unless necessary and use per-contract allowances when possible.

Reporting & community

If you encounter bugs or security issues, report them on Ledger's official GitHub or via the Support Center. Engage with Ledger Learn and community resources for tutorials, best practices, and walkthroughs.
